Why is it so hard to find a good web developer?

My frustration is getting the better of me.  I spent my entire night last night helping our web developer upload and test new code.  Apparently her computer broke, AGAIN, and she had to email me the files so I could upload them to the server every 20 minutes.  I don’t understand how she was able to use her computer to fix the code and email them to me, but she couldn’t FTP or use Remote Desktop to get the files on the server.  Argg!

We have been through three web developers in the past eight months and all of them suck!  I am regretting getting rid of my first one, who was 5 months behind schedule (on a 4 month project), overbudget, and finished with code that had dozens of obvious bugs.  That was the good developer!  Since then, I have somehow managed to hire only incompetent people who know nothing about programming, web technology, and basic internet/server technical stuff.

So if you are reading this out there and are a GOOD web developer or know someone who is, help us out please.  This is for our scrapbook design studio at www.modzy.com.  We need assistance with some small bug fixes and implementing photo editing tools into the site.  It’s only a contract position for now, shouldn’t take much time to complete our project.

    Josh,

Sorry to hear about the woes of your web development. If you need any help, I might be able to provide some given that you are working in a php/mysql environment. If not I hope you find some buddy soon and get your project back on track.

Thanks! Website is .NET Framework though.

Having a single developer work on a project is always risky. I’m not saying it’s possible to put two web designers together, but it is worth investigating having your work done by teams which if a half decent team will out-perform a single developer almost every time.

My company does not do .NET however depending on your budget I know two companies whom I would recommend - please get in touch.

    All the best,

    Jody

Any luck finding a developer? I have seen that it may be best to go with a reputable development company/group and google their reputation. Trial and error led me to this conclusion.

I have learned some important lessons… maybe this is good for a new post.
    1. Do a background check. I saw resumes and samples of the sites from the developers. I should have called their previous clients to inquire about their work.
    2. The contract needs to have strict deadlines and reprecussions for not meeting them. Just having deadlines isn’t enough, there has to be a financial incentive or punishment tied to the timeline.

One developer any even a moderate size project is a recipe for disaster, Two or even three developers are many times more productive and there is much less pressure.
